OUTER EAR: DUTHOIT/HAUTZINGER WITH MICHAEL ZERANG

May 19, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$8 - $10

In the midst of the proliferation of the use of electronics, Franz Hautzinger made a conscious decision to explore sound and texture exclusively by acoustic means while comprehending the development of digital music, which led to the use of the quartertone trumpet. Duo Duthoit/Hautzinger brings together two of Europe’s most creative improvisers into an intimate co-exploration of abstract music. They will be joined by Chicago musician and composer Michael Zerang.

Franz Hautzinger has taken long and bendy detours and turned to many dead ends, he has spent years without instrumental activity and has made a hopeful new start. All this, those victories and defeats, this “History from the Total Crash to ‘Emergency Individualism’”, as he himself described it, made Franz Hautzinger the highly profiled musical personality that he is today.  Born on March 11, 1963 in Seewinkel, Burgenland, a Hannibal Marvin Peterson concert at Jazzgalerie Nickelsdorf was the young trumpeter’s “awakening experience”.

Classically trained French musician Isabelle Duthoit (born 1970) has developed her own very singular vocal technique. She frequently sings and improvises solos and duets with Phil Minton. In 2008, she was a resident at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto (Japan) to perform as a vocal soloist in the tradition of Noh and Bunraku theater. From 1995 to 2005, she created Fruits Festival Mhère “fields of improvisation” with Jacques Di Donato. She has taught clarinet and improvisation at the Conservatoire Departmental Evry (Essonne) since 1997.
