Juan Pastor’s Chinchano
A Chicagoan by way of Lima, Peru, percussionist Juan Pastor flavors the hard-bopping quintet with bits of his home country’s many folk styles. Chicagoland natives Marquis Hill (trumpet) and Rich Moore (alto sax, clarinet) tout a firm footing in American jazz while navigating charts that call upon Andean and Spanish-Peruvian traditions, and the rhythm section of Pastor, Stu Mindeman (piano, secondary percussion) and Jorge Roeder (bass) carry the tempo with brisk Afro-Peruvian polyrhythms. The group’s self-titled debut gets a proper release this Thursday at Constellation.
